Up to five Distinguished Alumni are chosen each year from as many as 100 nominees. These men and women are selected on the basis of the following criteria:

1. Only alumni of the college shall be eligible for the award.
2. Recipients should display genuine leadership, dedication and service to others; they should exemplify the qualities of a liberal arts education. Well-roundedness in aspects of career, family and community service are also considered.
3. Recipients are selected on the specific basis of:

• Excellence in career achievements
• Contributions to community/humanity
• Service to Albion College

4. Exempted from consideration for the award are current members of the Alumni Association board of directors, members of the College's board of trustees (not including honorary trustees), faculty, and staff. Once an individual is no longer in any of the above categories, he/she will be eligible for consideration.
5. The selection committee, made up of members of the Alumni Association board of directors, looks for outstanding achievement in at least two of the three areas outlined above.
6. The Distinguished Alumni Award(s) shall be presented at the awards ceremony during Homecoming weekend.
