The seniors turned in great performances as Albion College completed its season in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Erika Nichols turned in one of the highest finishes by an Albion woman in Coach Hayden Smith's nine-year tenure at Albion, and Sarah Ramp kept running despite her legs going numb at the mile mark. Nick Shaheen battled back from an illness that had sidelined him for the last two weeks. Led by Deion Pruitt and Drew Fuentes, Albion finished 15th in the men's standings.
The Albion College cross country teams saved their best races for the most important meet of the season. The Briton men finished third in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships as Drew Fuentes turned in his best effort of his Albion career, crossing the finish line in 13th place. As he has all season, Deion Pruitt led the men with an 11th place finish. The Briton women finished sixth, two points behind the fifth place team. Erika Nichols and Amanda Weaver were Albion’s top two runners with times of 25:02.9 and 25:15.2, respectively.
Albion College cross country coach Hayden Smith said his teams “held their own” against a bunch of nationally ranked teams that assembled for the Interregional Rumble at Oberlin College. Erika Nichols (pictured at left) turned in one of the best women’s 6K performances in school history, posting a time of 23:12 to finish 46th in the individual standings. The top five men’s runners finished in a 58-second gap with Deion Pruitt leading the way with an 8K time of 26:27.
