
Albion slugs its way to doubleheader split

ALBION, Mich. - Allison Smart (Manton/Manton) slugged a double and a homerun and drove in three runs, Jessica Stange (Macomb Township/Lutheran North) slugged a two-run homerun, and Jenna Dumbleton (Northville/Northville) drove in three runs as Albion College scored its first victory over Alma College since 2003 as the Britons outscored the Scots, 16-10, in the second game of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader at Dempsey Field.Albion's first six batters reached base as it scored seven times in the first inning. The Britons added a run in the second to build an 8-0 lead. Albion added three runs in the fourth and five in the seventh.
Smart, Stange, Dumbleton, Kara Wandrie (Clarkston/Clarkston), Tate Kern (Kaleva/Brethren), Brenna Przeslawski (Harper Woods/Grosse Pointe North), and Alyssa Tropea (Bloomfield Hills/Seaholm) all collected three hits in the game.
The run support was enough for pitchers Amber Hummel (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) and Jenna Hogg (Flat Rock/Flat Rock). Hummel worked the first three innings, and Hogg was credited with the win after going the final four.
Albion settled for a split on the day after losing game one, 5-2. Kern slugged a two-run homerun in the second inning. Kern's homer pushed Albion to a 2-1 lead, but Alma came back with two runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning.
Albion (8-8 overall, 1-1 MIAA) is scheduled to continue league play Saturday, playing a twinbill at Adrian College. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
