September 15, 2008-- Outdoor Warning System
Albion College has installed an Outdoor Warning System on campus to alert faculty, staff, and students of a life-threatening situation occurring on or near campus. The Outdoor Warning System has the capacity to broadcast a siren sound, to play a series of tones, and to be utilized as a public address (P.A.) system. The College will utilize the siren sound as the primary means of alerting the campus community in an emergency. The brief series of tones, known as Special Information Tones (SIT), are the tones heard when a telephone number is called that has been disconnected. The SIT will normally be activated to alert the campus community that a message is going to be broadcast via the P.A. system.
Please note that this siren has a different sound than the City of Albion emergency siren, which is activated every evening at 10:00 p.m.; when Calhoun County is under a Tornado Warning; and for major fires occurring in the city. It is important that everyone in our community be familiar with the sound of the campus siren and to be able to distinguish it from the City of Albion siren.
Albion College will conduct an initial test of this system at 5:00 p.m. Friday, Sept 19, 2008. Beginning in October, the system will be tested at 5:00 p.m. on the last Friday of the month. The test will include activation of the SIT, a P.A. announcement of the test, and activation of the siren for up to thirty seconds.
Further information, including when the Outdoor Warning System may be activated and what you should do when you hear it, is available as a Word document , or in PDF format .
